The Man Behind The Shop

A school teacher by day, IV Woodworks is my creative outlet. While I spend my days working with 7th and 8th graders, I spend my nights and weekends in the shop. What started as a weekend long class in college has now become an important part of my life. My work is done in one of two workshops, the one in my basement to produce the smaller items during the week, and a second much larger shop in the suburbs, where I have a fully kitted out worksop where I do all of my material prep and turn the bowls.

The pieces I make are heavily influenced by the materials I work with. I source most of my bowl blanks from locally felled trees that I save from the scrap heap. All of the resin I work with is cast in house, and thus the colors and designs are all controlled by me. I have made my mark by using wood that traditionally is discarded, so what others reject or avoid, I embrace. My chaos blanks are glued up from all of these pieces that are too good to throw away but too small for another project and bowls that crack get stitched together. I draw attention to these eccentric features rather than hiding them as these are what make my work mine.
